Once a fiercely independent city-state, Patan (pah-tan) is now almost a suburb of Kathmandu, separated only by the murky Bagmati River. Emperor Ashoka once led the brutal Kalinga war where thousands of people had died. It was a bloody and brutal war so much so that the Daya river turned red with blood.
