Kanchenjunga Trek is a classical Himalayan trekking expedition that takes you to the most secluded region of far-eastern Nepal. This epic Himalayan quest that takes you on an exhilarating exploration to the base of the third highest mountain in the world, Mt Kanchenjunga at 8,586 meters (28,169 feet), was only opened to foreign trekkers in 1988. Located at the border of Nepal and Sikkim (India), this expedition is an ideal alternative for trekkers who want to explore the serene and tranquil prospects of the eastern Himalayan region away from the mainstream crowd.

This epic Himalayan quest is considered to be the best off-beaten trekking adventure in the country and combines the expedition of both Kanchenjunga North and Kanchenjunga South base camps. In the past, this expedition was completely a camping adventure, but now, there are teahouses in the trekking route that accommodate the trekkers in this extensive Himalayan trekking adventure.

Best Time for Kanchenjunga Trek

Kanchenjunga Trek

The best time for a comfortable and enjoyable Kanchenjunga Trek is during the season like spring (March- May) and autumn (September- November). These seasons are also known as the peak seasons in the country and offer the most stable weather conditions, dry trekking trails, warm temperatures, and incredible mountain views.

Compared to autumn, spring is a little bit warmer with the temperature of the Kanchenjunga region hovering around 15°C to 21°C, but the blooming landscapes of the season make your everyday adventure simply magical. The temperature of the autumn season is on the milder side, averaging between 14°C to 18°C; besides the stunning visual of different colors in this fall season, you will have the opportunity to participate in some of the grandest festivals of the country, like Dahsain, Tihar, Chhath, Indra Jatra and Mani Rimdu.

Kanchenjunga Trek Difficulty

Among the mainstream trekking adventures in the Himalayan region, the Kanchenjunga Trek is slightly extensive. The difficulty level of this iconic trekking adventure in the country is at a ‘moderate’ level; you don’t need any technical skills, nor do you need to have any prior experience in high-altitude trekking to do this trek.

However, it is still a challenging Himalayan expedition that explores the remote-rugged landscapes of the secluded part of the eastern Himlayas with high-elevation jump points. You will spend a significant amount of time over the altitudes of 3,000 and 4,000 meters, where the risks of altitude sickness are potentially high, with the highest elevation point of the entire expedition being Pang Pema (5,140 meters/ 16,863 feet).

Thus, you need to make adequate preparations to do this trek; still, overall success rate of the Kanchenjunga Trek is 98%. With a basic level of fitness and good health conditions, you will be able to complete this iconic trek comfortably.
