Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve and Koshi Barrage is an extremely important resting place for many migratory birds. And contains 87 winter and trans-Himalayan migratory species. The Koshi River is home to 80 species of fish. The endangered Gharial crocodile and Gangetic dolphin have been recorded in the river as well. Much wildlife visits these areas during dusk and dawn. The clear skies allow for beautiful sights of several Himalayan peaks including Makalu (8463m) the world’s fifth highest peak. Visitors can arrange elephant safari from Reserve Headquarters.

Daily bus service is available from Kathmandu to  Kakarbhitta or Biratnagar. Visitors should get off the bus at Jamuha, 4 km from Laukhi. And walk 2.5 km to the Reserve Headquarter. There are also daily flights to Biratnagar, visitors flying to Biratnagar will have to take a bus and should stop at Jamuha.

Experience the Koshi Tappu Rainforest

Experience the Koshi Tappu rainforest and go in search of Koshi Tappu’s rich wildlife on this 3 days/2 nights tour of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in eastern Nepal. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, the smallest national parks of Nepal is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The river islands – Koshi Tappu is home to a least 493 species of birds as well as being the last habitat of the endangered Arna long pointy horned wild water buffalo. It covers 175 sq km of wet and grassland habitat.

Wonderfully Serene

Koshi Tappu National Park is a wonderfully serene spot. And most travelers who visit are birdwatchers in search of rare species such as the swamp francolin, Bengal florican, and Saras crane. Migratory species from Siberia and Tibet take up residence from November to February. While it lacks heavy hitters like tigers and rhinos, there’s still plenty to see – including Gangetic dolphins, blue bulls, deer, golden jackals, marsh muggers, fishing cats, mongooses, civet cats, and porcupines. Gangetic dolphins are best spotted from the bridge at Koshi Barrage.

Day 01: Kathmandu to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

Arrive Biratnagar airport and drive to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Camp, lunch and birding in the nearby surroundings and dinner.

Day 02: Wildlife Tour

Wake up call, morning nature walk nearby and breakfast. Gentle wildlife rafting on the Sapta Koshi river with guides. View some of the water birds, water buffaloes, dolphins, marine and jungle wildlife. End boat trip by the bank of the river and have picnic lunch. Short drive to the Koshi Barrage to view bird life and freshwater dolphins. Late afternoon return to the camp and dinner.

Day 03: Wildlife Tour

Wake up call, bird watching in the jungle nearby and breakfast. Birding along the dam of the Koshi River and the area of Pink Tower which crosses the Koshi Barrage. Picnic lunch at the Pink Tower. Late afternoon returns to camp for dusk bird watching and dinner.

Day 04: Koshi Tappu to Kathmandu

Wake up call, bird watching in the jungle nearby and breakfast and drive to Biratnagar airport to fly back to Kathmandu.
