Langtang Valley Trek – 9 Days

9 Days

The Langtang Valley Trek is a remarkable adventure that takes trekkers deep into the heart of Nepal’s Langtang National Park. Just a short drive from Kathmandu Valley, this trek is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural richness, making it an ideal destination for those seeking both natural beauty and a touch of traditional Himalayan life.

The journey typically begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the starting point of the trek. As trekkers leave the bustling city behind, they are gradually introduced to the tranquility of the countryside. The trek initially follows the Langtang Khola River, leading through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and bamboo. These forests are home to a variety of wildlife, including the elusive red panda and numerous bird species, offering a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts.

As the trail ascends, trekkers are treated to increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The sight of snow-capped peaks such as Langtang Lirung (7,227 meters) against the clear blue sky is truly awe-inspiring. The path passes through several small villages and settlements, providing glimpses into the daily lives of the local Tamang and Sherpa communities. These encounters offer a unique cultural experience, as trekkers can observe traditional practices and even participate in local festivities if the timing is right.

One of the trek’s highlights is reaching Langtang Village, which was significantly affected by the 2015 earthquake but has since been rebuilt. The resilience and spirit of the local people are evident in the way the village has been restored. From Langtang Village, the trail continues to Kyanjin Gompa, situated at an elevation of 3,870 meters. Kyanjin Gompa is not only a religious site but also a point from which trekkers can explore the surrounding area, including the glacial moraine and several stunning viewpoints.

At Kyanjin Gompa, trekkers often take an extra day to acclimatize and explore. A popular excursion is the hike to Tserko Ri (5,000 meters), which offers panoramic views of the Langtang range and beyond. The serene environment, coupled with the stunning vistas, makes the effort to reach the summit highly rewarding.

The return journey follows the same route back to Syabrubesi, offering a different perspective and the opportunity to revisit favorite spots along the way. The trek typically spans 7-10 days, making it accessible to many trekkers with moderate fitness levels. Accommodation is provided by teahouses along the route, which offer basic but comfortable lodging and meals.

The best times to undertake the Langtang Valley Trek are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these periods, the weather is generally stable, and the skies are clear, providing the best conditions for trekking and photography.

In conclusion, the Langtang Valley Trek is a rewarding adventure that combines stunning natural landscapes with rich cultural experiences. It offers trekkers the chance to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Himalayas while also connecting with the resilient and welcoming local communities. Whether you are an experienced trekker or a novice, the Langtang Valley Trek promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Nepal’s mountains.

Langtang valley trek itinerary

After having breakfast, you will head out to Dhunche on a 7-8 hour bus ride. The bus ride takes you along winding uphills and downhills as it drives along to many rural towns and farm villages. The road to Dhunche is to the north of Kathmandu valley. As the road leaves Trishuli Bazaar, it climbs uphill to cooler regions leaving the rice paddy behind to and taking you along maize and millet terraced fields. You will notice a change in the weather as well as the people and culture. You will then arrive at the entrance of Dhunche (1,780m), which is a major town of Langtang area and Rasuwa district.

Today, you will start your trek to reach Thulo Syabru. Early in the morning after breakfast trail begins on a motor able road which later merges into trekking trail at Bharku. The trail gradually reaches to (Pairo) landslide and leads you to Thulo Syabru (2,260m). The trail passes through calm pine forest which is real fun to trek by, the chirping of birds and the silent forest adds an extra dimension into your trekking on this day. Thulo Syabru is a beautiful Sherpa and Tamang village from where you can observe the miraculous vista of Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal and overnight here.

Today you will start your hike and head out to Lama Hotel. The initial part of the trail to Lama Hotel takes you along Bhote Koshi River followed by a trail along Langtang Khola. You will ascend along a steady uphill to Bamboo (1,960 m) trekking in rugged trails. From Bamboo, the trail takes you along a gentle slope to Rimche (2,400 m). You will have your lunch in Rimche. Another hour of steady uphill trek leads you to your overnight stop at Lama Hotel, which is an ideal spot to spend your night. On your way to Lama Hotel, you might also be able to catch the glimpses of red pandas, monkeys, and bears if you are fortunate. Lama Hotel is a wonderful place to stay with some time for a refreshing splash in the nearby river. The trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2420 meters) is 5-6 hours long.

The walk is more or less an uphill climb in the cool shade of rhododendron and oaks forest. After trekking for a while, you will get to a gorge following the torrent glacial river Trisuli upstream. After trekking for three hours, you will get to Ghoda-Tabela. “Ghoda-Tabela” in the literal sense means Horse Stable. This is a beautiful settlement that is set amidst pines, hemlocks and rhododendron forests. After a pleasant stop here, the trek continues to Langtang valley. You will trek through cool shade of the alpine wood for an hour, leaving the tree line behind. After trekking uphill for an hour, you will trek along a gradual winding trail with few ups and down before you reach Langtang village. You will spend your night in this valley, which provides you glimpses of Langtang Himal peeping in the north on top of the great rock wall.

Today, you will leave for Kyanjin Gompa. You will head out for the exploration after you have breakfast. The trail leads you along a gradual path for a small amount of time. It also takes you up along some winding up hills. After trekking along these curvy uphill paths, you will reach a destination where you encounter Burberry and high alpine shrubs.

You will also encounter “mani-prayer wall”. You will have to walk in the clockwise direction when you encounter these prayer walls. As you trek towards the eastern side, you will see the valley opening up. You will then walk on the grassy meadows. At a distance, you will also be able to see some fantastic mountain views.

You will trek gently as you might have difficulty gaining some altitude before reaching Kyanjin Gompa (3870 meters). Kyanjin Gompa is beautiful place to watch panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Langtang Lirung (7,234m) and its icefall is the closest landscape to the Gompa. The Kyanjin Gompa monastery lies on the top of a knoll. This ridge is formed by large boulders. The hike from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa is 3-4 hours long.

Today is a rest day which you can use for sightseeing Kyanjin Gompa. You can visit the cheese factory here which provides some delectable cheese. You also have the opportunity to trek up to the moraine. From here, you can have fantastic views of icefalls and the gigantic glaciers of Langtang Lirung. If you have the energy, you can also trek up to Kyanjin Ri (4,350 m). This is also the highest part of this trek. You can also wonder around the back of the village in case you are still hungry for more mountain views.

After a wonderful time at Kyangin, journey heads back on the same trail to Lama-Hotel. The journey today is 6-7 hours long. You will first reach Langtang valley. From there as you walk through rhododendron forests, you will get to Ghoda-Tabela. From there, you will take a downhill along the stream of Trishuli before reaching Lama Hotel.

After having breakfast in Lama Hotel, you will trek through a hillside which will take you to large a Sherpa settlement. From there the descent to Bridhim village is short and easy. Along the way, you can also catch breathtaking views of Ganesh Himal range, the Himalayas of the Tibetan and the horizontal views of Langtang valley. The trekking trail descends further to the confluence of Langtang River and Bhote Koshi River. Eventually, you will reach Syabru Besi. Today you will trek for around 5 hours.

Alternative Route:

There is an alternative route to get to Syabrubesi from Lama Hotel. This route follows Langtang River downstream as you trek through the lower valley. This route is comparatively shorter and easier. But it doesn’t offer as good a view of the mountains as the upper route. Further, this route might not be fit for trekking in the summer season if the track is by a landslide or nasty latches.

After breakfast in Syabrubesi, you will head back to Kathmandu on a 7-8 hour bus ride. The road is primarily a winding downhill with a few bumpy tracks in between. The road to Kathmandu is the same one you come to Syabrubesi. The drive will be very enjoyable as you get to witness the lovely nature of Nepal over again while you enjoy your drive.

We planed our own 23-days trip of ACT, and contacted the boss of “The Great Adventure Treks & Expedition “, Mani, for a guide, porter and permission, transportation services etc…before starting our trekking trip. I appreciate with their kindness and flexibility during the trip plan negotiation and professional help. Thanks Mani, our guide Santosh, and our porter Harry for taking care of us so well. They are reliable, and full of respect sense to local culture and knowledges during such a long day of company. Especially through Santosh and Harry, I therefore can enjoy much of staying every village and learn more local things, even a bit language. They also tried their effort to fit our need of plan even though the plan was sometimes changeable. In the end we fulfilled our trekking route among ACT area. Next time if I have chance to go for another trekking trip in Nepal, I’ll still choose them.

I did the langtang trek and it was really special one in a lifetime experience. The trek itself is quite outstanding passing through spectacular forests, valleys with stunning rivers and waterfalls and outstanding Mountain View’s. Had the chance to meet some wonderful people sharing stories, laughs, and playing cards together in the evening. My guide pasang went literally the extra mile for me making sure I was well attended and even days not feeling so well, encouraging me and helping me with my equipment and needs. He even spotted various wild animals like boar, mountain deer, monkeys and various birds. Il always appreciate this experience

We did a Langtang trek organized by Mr Mani. We were accompanied by our best guide ever Shubham. He was so attentive, kind , we didn't think about anything during the trek. We had a lot of time for talking, he told us many interesting things about Nepal, people, culture, traditions and so on. Shubham helped us to find the teahouse after long day, ordered a food in advance and did so much for us that we could avoid any problems on trek. He even believed in us when we we're exhausted by climbing to Tserko ri :) And (this is important) he is very fluent in English Be sure that if you go with Shubham you will be kept in good hands. I wish all the best to him and his team!
