Twice a year high in the Himalayan foothills of central Nepal teams of men gather around cliffs that are home to the world's largest honeybee, Apis laboriosa. As they have for generations, the men come to harvest the Himalayan cliff bee's honey. The harvest ritual, which varies slightly from community to community, begins with a prayer and sacrifice of flowers, fruits, and rice. Then a fire is lit at the base of the cliff to smoke the bees from their honeycombs.
From above, a honey hunter descends the cliff harnessed to a ladder by ropes. As his mates secure the rope and ladder from the top and ferry tools up down as required, the honey hunter fights territorial bees as he cuts out chunks of honey from the comb." A chance to view and experience the traditional honey hunting harvest of the Gurung people. The Bees Apis laboriosa and Apis dorsata are indigenous to the region and traditional methods of harvesting the honey on steep cliffs have remaned unchanged for generations.
The introduction of non indigenous plant species and the Eurporean honey bee Apis mellifera have put pressure on these local bees to compete, and they need to fly further and further to forage their prefered plant species. This along with over harvesting has resulted in the bees' decline. The Himalayan Honeybees project for the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu has been actively involved in the sustainable management of honey hunting and work with the local communities to ensure the survival of the species.
Tourism in this area helps communities protect the flora and fauna, and so gives the bees and local hunters a chance to co-exist and continue. The Great Adventure Treks & Expedition will donate a percentage of profits from these trips to local communities who are actively involved and promoting ICIMOD ideas. There are great views of peaks Lamjung Himal, Manaslu, Hiunchuli, Buddha Himal and Annapurna II

Unforgettable Trek with Outstanding Support – Highly Recommended!
I had an absolutely incredible trekking experience with Great Adventure Treks. Every detail was covered top to bottom, making the journey seamless and completely stress-free. My guide, Aitey, and my porter, Denis, were exceptional. Some sections of the trek were challenging and even a little scary for me, but they were with me every step of the way, offering guidance, encouragement, and expert care. I felt completely safe and supported throughout the entire journey. The company always made sure I had the best rooms and transportation, which was greatly appreciated and added to the comfort of the trip. I cannot overstate how fantastic it was that the manager, Mani, helped me with my last-minute Indian visa. Without his assistance, I would have been in a very difficult situation - potentially losing time, money, and facing a lot of stress. His quick, effective help saved me both stress and costs and ensured I could continue my journey smoothly. Mani’s responsiveness and dedication went far beyond what I expected. Everyone part of this company is extremely friendly and personable which always adds to the experience. I can say without hesitation: this was the best trekking experience I’ve ever had, and I would 100% recommend Great Adventure Treks to anyone planning a trek in Nepal.

“We had a 2-day Kathmandu World Heritage Tour with this company. Our guide, Sama, was very professional, informative, and an excellent tour guide. We highly recommend him for anyone visiting Kathmandu.” 😊
One of the best treks of my life! My guide, Binod, is so sweet and passionate about his job and knows everything. Without him this would’ve been such a different experience, because he always makes sure you’re happy and comfortable. The organisation was also perfect so I didn’t have to worry about a single thing. Perfect👌
I recently completed the Ghorepani – Poon Hill – Tadapani – Ghandruk trek (3–4 days), and it was an unforgettable experience in the Annapurna region. The landscapes were incredibly diverse—lush forests, peaceful mountain trails, and beautiful villages—ending with the charming atmosphere of Ghandruk. The highlight was definitely the sunrise at Poon Hill, with stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges. A big part of what made the trek so smooth and enjoyable was our guide, Mr. Binod, our Porter Mr. Tubonat and Mr. Chandra. He was professional, friendly, and very attentive—always managing the pace well, checking on our condition, and making sure everything was organized along the way (tea houses, breaks, and route guidance). His support and calm attitude made the journey feel safe and comfortable from start to finish. I highly recommend Mr. Binod if you’re looking for a well-guided, stress-free trekking experience in Nepal and tour The Great Advanture.
